Varkala Project: Next Venture on PPP mode

TRKL, under Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala, proposes to implement a mega tourism project at Varkala, Thiruvananthapuram District, on Public Private Partnership mode. The proposed site is in the same compound of Varkala guest house and situated in the heart of varkala town, a well known tourist destination. The project site is in proximity to ‘Paapanasham Beach’, one of the top rated tourist beaches in Kerala. The site is adjacent to The Gateway Hotel, which is a joint initiative of TRKL and Taj Group.

Varkala is about 50 kms north from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city. The site is just about 1.5 kms from the Varkala railway station and the nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, which is about 50 kms from the site. Varkala is also considered as the place of pilgrimage as the famous Sivagiri Temple and Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple is located very near to Varkala town. The Sivagiri Mutt, which is situated at the top of Sivagiri Hills, Varkala attracts thousands of people every year. Varkala Beach has earned a price of place just behind Kovalam in the grading of beach destinations of Kerala. Kovalam destination is almost reached its saturation in the carrying capacity and this would open out the significance of Varkala in the Tourism Sector. Leveraging on these positive factors, the strategically located land of 6.47 acres (2.62 hectares) could be developed into highly productive Tourism Product.

The initiative on Public Private Partnership mode is in the preparatory stage. EOI/RFQ inviting potential Investors will be notified soon.
