Homestays in Kerala offer a bright, affordable and secure accommodation option for tourists in God's Own Country. It is a unique way for visitors to discover this magical land, its vibrant culture, its rich tradition and its unique lifestyle. A concept that captures the essence of Keralan hospitality, Homestays give the visitors the feel of home miles away from home. More and more visitors are now opting for homestays as it gives the opportunity to be as close to the destination as possible.
Project requirements
- The rooms should have a capacity ranging from 2 to 6 beds.
- There must be adequate sanitary fittings like lavatories/bathrooms with running water in each room.
- Rooms shall be properly ventilated, finished and lighted.
- Fans or air conditioners shall be provided in all rooms.
- Minimum carpet area standards prescribed for bath/bedrooms shall be 50 sq.ft. per bed.
Essential conditions for classification
- The Department will get the houses inspected by a Committee headed by the Secretary of the DTPC and only those houses which are found suitable for tourists will be selected for registration.
- According to the facilities available and as per the observation of the Committee these rooms will be classified into Diamond House, Gold House or Silver House.
- After registration, a directory of all selected houses will be prepared. This directory will be circulated among travel agents and tour operators worldwide for publicity/marketing and will also be put on the Internet. The directories will also be available at all Tourist Information/Facilitation Centres for ready reference.
- Registration of new Homestays and their inclusion in the directory will be a continuous process.
- A Feedback Cell will function in the Directorate of Tourism and at the DTPCs to
- look into suggestions/complaints regarding the Homestays that come under this scheme.
- Districtwise meetings will be held with the registered house owners at least once a year, to develop mutual understanding and to take care of any shortcomings of the scheme.
Application procedure
Your application should be submitted in the prescribed format available at the Department of Tourism, accompanied by a non-refundable fee of Rs. 3,000/- (Diamond House), Rs. 2,000/-(Gold House), Rs. 1,000/- (Silver House), in the form of a Demand Draft favouring the Director, Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala.
